Regenerative property of skin makes it primary organ that provides protection of underlying muscles, bones, ligaments and internal organ from any external biological, chemical and physical agents. Additionally, skin also helps in temperature regulation, dehydration, synthesis of vitamin D3. A wound is considered as a disturbance in the continuation of epithelial lining of skin or mucosa resulting from physical or thermal damage. Depending on the nature of healing process and duration wound is classified as acute and chronic and chronic wounds have a severe impact on health and quality of life that lead many difficulties like causing pain, loss of function, depression, anxiety, long term hospitalization and chronic morbidity and death. Therefore, appropriate wound care is necessary to prevent infection and further complications. In this review paper discussion is about recent advances in antimicrobial dressing which is used for both wound healing of acute and chronic wounds. This review article deals with wound and its types along with its pathophysiology, polymers used in wound dressing, Patents and commercially available wound dressing.
